black land brigade
on land
young folks at work
The Black Land Brigade gathers college-age students studying or interested in farming, food, forestry, and natural resources to volunteer a portion of their spring / summer / fall break to work, explore, and learn from the land with other like-minded students. The group camps out for five(+) days of building resiliency, restoration, retooling, and recreation on Black-owned farmland. The goal is to support and teach by providing students with the opportunity to engage hands-on, in the dirt, while gaining practical experience as the next generation of land stewards. Each BLB explores land-based needs as well as agrarian and regenerative projects that support the farm(er) without demanding obligations, allowing land owners to share their knowledge and expertise while receiving physical support on pre-planned land projects. This pilot launched in March of 2024.
powering up a new generation
A week supporting Black farmers and land stewards can have a profound impact on their entire year, while offering young people a hands-on community experience to learn from their elders and explore a future in land stewardship and food system support.
